The Olivetti rode shotgun all the way out of Lordsburg, its case belted in with a ratchet strap because the road past the Playas dips like a fairground ride. I had been fixing typewriters for thirty years and had never sat with one through a whole desert morning, but the widow at the last filling station had asked me to take it, and you do not argue with a woman who has already paid you in pecan pie.

The machine had belonged to her husband, a telegraph clerk who typed everything in lowercase because he said capitals shouted. Under the platen I found a sheet still rolled in, half a line on it: faith. The full stop had been struck so hard it bit through the paper. Every key worked except the one that should have made the f, which had a hair of rust and a spring that wanted to stay down.

I spent the afternoon at a picnic table outside a shuttered motel in Hachita, cleaning the bar with a cocktail stick and a drop of oil while the heat shimmered off the road. When the f finally rose, I typed it out on a fresh sheet to test it: f a i t h, and then the full stop, exactly as he had left it. It came out in that same tidy serif, every letter sitting on one line as if it had nowhere else to be.

I took the sheet back with the machine. She read it with her glasses down her nose, then asked what I owed her. I told her nothing. Some words only need typing once, and the rest of us just keep the carriage moving.
