Script quote tattoo on the collarbone
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a handwritten phrase, "with every heartbeat", tattooed in a single line along the collarbone and shoulder area. The linework is thin and even, in a flowing script with slight variation in stroke weight, and the ink is a soft black-grey. The shallow focus and pale, muted background keep attention on the lettering, with a loose knit top sitting below it.

The snow had come early to the Scarrow Pass, and the mail was already three days late when you reached the hut. Old Hennig had left the sack on the bench with a note tied to it in twine: the last letter for the valley, addressed in a hand you did not recognise. You turned it over. The wax was cracked but the seal was still whole.

Inside, the stove smoked and the lamp needed trimming. You read the first line by its light and then had to sit down. It was written to Ilse, who had kept the post house on the far side of the pass for thirty years, and it said only that the writer would come back before the thaw, and that he would keep time with every heartbeat until then, counting the days the way a clock counts. You had never heard the phrase before. It sounded like something a man says when he cannot say the other thing.
Ilse had died in October. Everyone in the valley knew it. You had helped carry her down to the church yourself. Still, you took the letter and the pack and went up again in the blue dark, because the pass does not care who is expecting what, and because somebody should walk it.
At the cairn above the hut you found a second envelope, frozen to a stone, in the same hand. Inside was a single line and a date in the spring. You buttoned it into your breast pocket and began the long descent, counting your steps, one for each beat, and by the time the lights of the village came up through the cloud you had lost the count and did not mind.
