Script quote tattoo on the forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a forearm and wrist showing the phrase 'i am not afraid to walk this world alone' written in three lines of black cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink sits flat against the skin. The background is a grey paved surface and some green foliage, with the arm angled diagonally across the frame.

I found his notebook in the drawer under the chart table, the brown one with the bent spine. On the inside cover, in that square hand of his that never once sloped, he had written the line you always mocked him for: i am not afraid to walk this world alone. Underneath, he had drawn a little lamp with rays coming off it like the spokes of a wheel. The date is the Tuesday before he rowed across for the last time. He must have written it while the kettle was on, because there is a ring of tea beside the words.
I have decided to walk the causeway at low water on Saturday, by myself, with his boots on my own feet, which are a size too small and will blister me to ruin. I know the path. I have only ever walked it holding someone's sleeve. Write to me at the post office in Wick and tell me what the city looks like at night, and whether the lamps there are kept by anyone at all.
If the fog comes in while you are reading this, do not light a candle for me. I will be the one at the top of the tower, turning the wick up, telling the sea exactly where the rocks are.
