Lettered quote tattoo on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a black tattoo of the lowercase phrase "i am not afraid to walk this world alone" set in three lines across the inner wrist and forearm. The letters are fine, even lines with no shading, and the text slants slightly upwards towards the wrist. The background is a green hedge and a grey pavement, with the skin tone and ink both looking clear and evenly dark.

Dear Tom,

The lamp at Skerrow was switched off on Tuesday, for good this time, and the men from the council came with a van and a clipboard and asked where I wanted the brass plate. I told them they could keep it. Your grandad would have hated being polished for a museum. He spent forty years climbing those one hundred and twelve steps with a flask in his coat pocket and never once complained about the wind.
I found the cardboard box at the back of the wardrobe this morning, the one with his logbooks. Inside the cover of the last one, in his square capitals, he had copied out a line from a book the old keeper lent him: i am not afraid to walk this world alone. Underneath, in pencil, he had written Mary, you'll see. I never asked him what he meant, and now I'm too stubborn to guess.
So I'm sending the logbook with this letter, because you are the one getting the Monday train to Glasgow with a rucksack and a head full of plans, and I am not going to tell you to be careful. You'll be careful anyway. The torch in the parcel is yours too. The batteries are new, I checked them twice.
Write when the city has worn off a bit. Tell me about the trams. Love, Nan.
