Black handwritten script tattoo on the inner wrist reading 'i am not afraid to walk this world alone', in a fine line lettering style.

Handwritten quote tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm up, with a black script tattoo across the inner wrist and forearm. The words 'i am not afraid to walk this world alone' are set in three lines of thin, slightly uneven handwritten lettering. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the plain green hedge and paving in the background keep the focus on the text.

We just keep rolling the wagons into a different field each week as if the next town will be the one that fills.

I have the blue cart to myself now. Ruben went home to his mother in Leeds with his trombone wrapped in a blanket, and the two clowns who did the fire act have taken jobs at a garden centre. Last night I sat on the step with a cup of tea gone cold and counted what is left: four horses, a box of hoops, the rope for the high wire that nobody has walked since March, and your old sewing kit, which I found under the seat and have not had the heart to post.

Here is the thing I keep turning over. Mrs Oakes asked me on Sunday whether I was frightened, going on alone. I told her I was not afraid to walk this world alone, which was a lie, but then I said the rope will hold if I hold it, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on a crate. I think I meant it as a joke. I am writing it down so I remember I said it.

If you are passing through the Borders in August, the field behind the Co-op in Hawick has a good flat patch. Bring something warm. I will be the one stringing lights in an empty ring, practising the steps I was never going to need.
