Black script quote on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a hand raised towards the camera, with a line of black script tattooed across the inner wrist reading 'i am not afraid to walk this world alone' in three staggered lines. The lettering is written in a fine, slightly uneven handwritten style with consistent dark ink. The background is blurred greenery and paving, which keeps attention on the wrist.

The Marigold has been tied to the lock wall at Stoke Hythe since the frost, and you have been scraping her gunwale for three days when Mrs Pell comes down the towpath with a flask and a letter. She doesn't hand it over at once. She reads the address aloud as if it were a summons, then tucks the envelope into your coat pocket and says the post boat won't run again before the thaw.

The letter is from your brother, who went south for the railway and has never written more than a postcard. Inside is a single folded sheet, the ink bleeding where the rain got at it, and a line in his cramped hand: come home if you can, or don't, but don't pretend you haven't got the choice. You read it twice on the lock beam, then fold it back along its creases and watch the black water of the cut, where your reflection breaks into pieces each time a moorhen dives.
That evening you cast off without telling anyone. The paddles drop with a sound like a held breath, and the water falls beneath the hull by a hand's width, then a foot, until the gates groan open and the Marigold slides out onto the broad river. The current takes her before you have settled the tiller. Somewhere behind you the lamps of Stoke Hythe go out one by one, and you say the words he wrote out loud to nobody, just to hear how they sound over the water.
The mooring line is still looped round the ring on the wall when you look back. You could cut it. Instead you let it play out through your hands until the end of it goes slack and slides into the river, and the boat is yours to steer wherever the river goes.
