Black script lettering reading How we survive is what makes us who we are, tattooed across the ribs with some redness around it.

Script quote tattoo on the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script quote in three lines across the side of a torso, set over the ribs. The lettering uses bold, connected strokes with solid black fill and no shading. The skin around the tattoo shows pinkish redness, which suggests the tattoo is fresh or still healing, and the background is softly out of focus.

The band is already tuning when you shoulder through the side door of the Pavilion at Marlow Sands, your shoes still wet from the promenade. Mr Pennock is chalking the cue for the last waltz on a blackboard by the cloakroom, the letters looping the way he was taught at the commercial college, and he does not look up when you say you have come about the job. "Sweep the sprung floor and mind the loose boards by the stage," he says. "Nobody here gets paid to be sorry."

For three winters you sweep up cigarette ends, fish out lost gloves, and learn which of the trumpet players will drink your tips if you leave them on the piano. The girls who come in from the cannery on Thursdays dance with their coats still on, trading their week for a half-hour foxtrot. One night a woman in a green coat stops beside the pillar and asks you to read the painted sign above the bandstand, because her eyes have started to blur at the edges. You read it slowly. How we survive is what makes us who we are. She laughs, a short dry sound, and tells you her husband lettered it the summer the pit closed, and that he never once asked her to dance in all the years after.

You sweep around her feet until the lights come up and the band packs away. The next morning you climb the ladder with a fine brush and a tin of black enamel, and you touch up the tail of the last word where the damp has lifted it. Nobody asks you to. Pennock watches from the doorway with his arms folded, then nods once and goes back to his chalk.
