Fine script line across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person with fair hair tied in a loose bun is photographed from behind, with bare shoulders and upper back filling the lower part of the frame. A single line of small, thin cursive script sits horizontally across the upper back between the shoulder blades. The image is black and white, with a blurred green garden behind, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

Dear Win,

The bank in Coldharbour has shut its doors for good, so Mam has taken the pie stall off the market and I have been sent to Gorsley's shop for thread, which is how I come to be writing this on the back of a bread docket. Mr Pell says the whole bootmaking trade will be gone by Michaelmas. The lads are talking about Birmingham. I am not sure I want Birmingham.
Last Thursday, while we were stacking the tins, Mrs Ackroyd from the library brought down the old copybook she had kept since the Coronation and read out a line she had written in it years ago. Middle of difficulty, it said, lies opportunity. She said a clever man had put it that way and that she had only ever pinned it up to stop herself crying in the stockroom. We all laughed. Then she made us each copy it out in our best hand, which is why there is smudged ink on my cuff now.
I have been turning that line over all week and have decided it is nonsense, the sort of thing people write when they have never had to choose between the rent and the coal. But I did walk up to the Ackroyd house on Sunday and ask her what she meant by opportunity. She said she did not know. She said that was rather the point, and then she pressed the copybook into my hands to keep.
So I am sending you the page. Come home at half term if you can. Bring your wages and we will go through the sums together, and then we will decide what the difficulty is and what it might be lying under.
Your loving sister, Dot
