Black script lettering running down the outer thigh of a person wearing denim shorts and knee-high boots, on a street.

Script quote tattooed on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close street photograph of a person's upper leg, with several lines of black cursive script tattooed vertically down the outer thigh. The lettering is fine and even, with the ink looking dark and crisp against the skin. The image is largely monochrome with colour only in the denim shorts, and pedestrians and shop shutters are visible in the blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had written her best man's speech on the back of a bus timetable, then spent the church porch crossing most of it out while the ushers argued about buttonholes. Her brother Gareth was marrying a vet called Priya in a village hall outside Kidderminster, and the sky had held off raining just long enough for the photographs. Dilys had promised to keep it short. She had promised herself a dignified exit too, which was harder once the hall's sound system started playing the wrong track.

Her Nan had given her the advice years earlier, over a paper cone of cold chips at the seaside. "Be ridiculous, love. Nobody ever remembers the person who was sensible." Dilys had nodded then and forgotten it. She remembered it now, standing at the top table with the timetable trembling in her hand.

So she told them about the school nativity, when Gareth, aged nine, had been cast as a jam tart because nobody else would take the part. He had refused to come out from behind the coat rack until the vicar offered him a sherbet lemon. She did the voice. She did the sherbet lemon. By the time she reached the duck pond, Priya was laughing so hard she had to hold the back of a chair, and Gareth was wiping his eyes with a napkin and mouthing thanks across the room.

Afterwards Nan caught her by the coat rack, the same brown one, and pressed a sherbet lemon into her palm. "Ridiculous," she said, quite approvingly, and went off to find the dance floor.
