Tribal leg sleeve with red flowers on thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A woman sits on a low wall with one leg extended, showing a large tattoo covering the thigh and down to the calf. The design is built from bold black tribal-style patterns with solid fills and fine linework, and a row of red hibiscus-like flowers sits across the upper thigh. The colour is limited to black ink and the red flowers, set against a plain street background with the face and upper body cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The fair came down the coast road the week the hibiscus opened along the harbour wall, and old Mattea Cole walked ahead of the wagons with a bucket of red paint on her hip. Nobody had ever asked her why she painted only the flowers that wilt in a day, not the grand roses the other showmen wanted. She said a flower that dies by evening teaches a child to look properly.

Her wagon carried the black bands of the old pattern, a run of spirals her grandmother cut into the drums, and every band joined the next so that no line ever ended. Tom the strongman said the bands were a map to somewhere good. Mattea said they were a fence, to keep the bad luck on the outside where it belonged.
On the last night of the fair the cash box went missing from the ticket booth, and the boy Ardal, who swept the sawdust and sang badly, was found by the sea wall with the coins in his shirt. The showmen wanted him locked in the cart until the constable came. Mattea knelt on the wet stone beside him and painted one red flower on the back of his hand. She told him a debt paid in paint would wash off in a week, so he had better pay the other kind.
By morning the fair had gone on up the road. The boy walked behind the last cart with his hand held out, and the bloom faded slowly into his skin, petal by petal, until there was nothing left to show but the work.
