Script quote tattoos on the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The top photo shows the phrase "you are the smell before rain" in cursive script across the side of the ribs. The lower photo shows a second line in similar script, "you are the blood in my veins", on the side of the torso above the hip, with the ending partly faded in the image. The lettering is thin, with smooth linework and uniform black ink on pale skin, and the two photos are placed one above the other in a split layout.

He wanted to know whether the ewes were lambing early, whether the beck had come up over the footbridge, and whether she had finally let the vet look at the grey mare's hoof.

She answered it at the kitchen table with the radio murmuring about road closures. She wrote about the frost on the top field, how the sheep looked like scattered chalk, and how the dog had taken to sleeping in the boot room with her nose to the crack under the door. He had always said she could read weather like other people read faces. She folded the letter twice, sealed it, and walked it down the lane in her wellingtons, the sky low and pewter above the wall. Halfway to the postbox the first drops hit her cheek, warm and unexpected, and she stopped and tipped her face up to them, breathing in, letting the smell of the coming rain fill her chest the way it always had.
