I stood at the crates counting windfalls under my breath while Mam leaned on the gate with the cash tin, watching the lane for the lorry from Hereford that was always late.

The old Bramley by the back wall had split in June, and when Dad cut the dead limb away he found a heart cut into the sapwood, no bigger than a thumbnail, outlined and left empty. He said his own father had done it with a penknife the summer before the war. I believed him until I opened the orchard ledger in the packing shed and found the same shape pencilled inside the cover, dated 1931, in a hand that leaned backwards as though it was walking away from the page.

Underneath, in the same hand: Bramleys to the Pritchards at fourpence, the heart left for whoever comes after. Nobody had ever told me who was meant to come after. Tomasz said it was a joke about the price. Mam said it was about the wood. I thought it was an instruction.

So I did what the pencil asked. I took the good penknife from Dad's drawer, shaved a little grey bark from around the old cut, and cut nothing at all, only traced the line a shade deeper so the next hard wind would not wear it away. When the lorry finally came up the lane, I was still kneeling by the wall with my thumb in the groove, and the windfalls were going soft in the grass around me.
