Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single word, Joy, written in thin black script on pale skin at the upper chest near the collarbone. The linework is fine and even, with looped letters and a long tail on the J. The image is black and white and framed tightly, with a grey garment edge at the bottom and neckline.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hollin Bank called it anything but the Jubilee, and nobody called the grey mare anything but Joy, because that was what the lamp-man's boy shouted the first morning she came up the drift blinking at the daylight. She was a pit pony who would not be hurried, and the men loved her for it, because a hurried pony is a dead pony when the roof starts to talk.

My brother Ned took her down each shift. He came home black to the elbows, lifted the wash-tub off its hook, and told me what she had done. She had stopped at the junction and refused to pass the broken prop. She had nosed Davey Pratt's pocket for the peppermints he kept there. Every night he said the same thing, that she knew the roof better than the overman did.

In the spring of the bad fire I wrote her name on the stable door in chalk, the way the children wrote their names on the bath-house wall, but I went over it three times so it would last past the rain. Ned said it would wash off. It did not. The chalk held in the grain of the wood, and the J curled down below the lintel like the tail of something that had decided to stay.

After that, Ned touched the J on his way out each morning, the way the men touched the pithead frame for luck. When the mare was old and the pit was shut, he drove her to a field past the allotments and left the gate open. She walked out slowly, and he said she stopped once to look back at the chalk on the door before she went on.
