Fine line script wording on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A side view of a torso shows a small fine line tattoo of cursive script placed over the ribs. The single black line lettering has thin, even strokes and a loose handwritten flow, and the wording is partly legible. The image is black and white, with the skin and dark clothing framing the tattoo in the centre of the frame.

She wrote about the frost that had taken the top field, and the miller's boy who had gone off to the coast with a fiddle and no shoes. She wrote that the path past the old oak had been cut back by the parish men, so the wolves had retreated deeper into the trees, and that Mrs Pryce swore she had seen a light moving between the birches the night before the thaw. None of it was news to him. He had walked those birches himself with the lantern and found only hoof prints and a dropped glove.

Then came the final line, slanted and loose, as if she had hurried to reach it before the candle guttered: love is enough to find the road home from any wood.

He folded the letter small and tucked it inside his coat, against his ribs where the cold came through first. At first light he lifted the latch, followed the birches she had described, and whistled a tune off key so that the forest would know a man was coming and that someone was waiting for him at the other end.
