Script word "love" on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand raised in a loose fist, showing a small single-word tattoo in thin black script on the inner wrist. The word love is written in a flowing, joined cursive with a fine, even line and a slightly softer, greyed tone where the ink has settled. The background is out of focus and warm in tone, with the hand sitting centrally in the frame.

Dear Carol, I am writing this on the back of a bus timetable because the hotel stationery has your name printed on it in gold, and I have had enough of that for one evening. You will remember the reunion. You will remember that Mr Tanner's microphone cut out halfway through his speech about the new science block, and that you laughed so hard you had to hold on to the coat stand.

What you will not remember, because you were always better at forgetting the things that cost you, is the note. Second form, the back row by the broken radiator. You folded a sheet of lined paper into a tight square and slid it across the desk to me, and on the outside you had written one word in joined-up cursive, the loops leaning as though they were in a hurry to get somewhere. I kept it for thirty-one years inside a copy of Jane Eyre. I never once asked what you meant by it.
Tonight, by the coat stand, you asked me the same thing without asking. You said, 'You still have that book?' and I said I did, and you looked at the floor the way you used to when Mr Tanner was about to ask who had been talking. We did not say anything else. Your husband was calling your name from the bar, and the lilies were going brown at the edges.
So here is my answer, which I should have given at fifteen. I do not think the word was a confession and I do not think it was a joke. I think you wanted one person in that room to know you had been brave for a minute, and you picked me because I would keep it. I have kept it. It is in the book, the book is in my bag, and the timetable is folded in my coat pocket, so you can have the word back whenever you like.
