Small elephant outline on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant in a single black outline sits on the inner wrist of a hand that is partly curled. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a clean black on light skin. The composition is tight on the wrist, with a gold ring and chain at the edge of the frame and a pale blue sky behind.

Mind the step, it's still wet from the mop, and don't open the proving drawers until your hands are warm. Right, where was I? Ah yes, the elephant.

Mrs Abernethy kept the corner bakery in Lewes when the gas lamps still hissed on the high street. She had a brass cutter no bigger than a thumbnail, shaped like a small elephant in a single thin line, and she pressed it into the top of every morning loaf before the oven took it. Nobody asked her why. The bread rose with a neat grey outline along its crust, and the gulls seemed to know which loaves were hers.
One February a flour boy came up from the mill with a cart of damp sacks and a sulk on his face. He stood by the back door while the sky went from ink to milk over the river. She handed him the cutter and told him to press it true. He pressed it crooked, so the trunk curled up like a question mark. She laughed until she had to sit on a flour bin and said it was the only honest elephant she had ever seen, because real ones never walked straight either.
He kept the cutter. Years later he opened his own bakery across the water, and every loaf that left his door carried that crooked little beast on its crust. Customers asked what it meant. He told them it was the bread's way of remembering the oven, and then he turned the loaf over so they could see the trunk pointing back toward the door they had come in by.
