Before the bells rang for the Dunmore wedding, the old women of Hollin Beck argued about the word cut above the church door. Nobody could read it but the schoolmaster, and he said only that it was old and meant something like thou mayest. The Dunmore men had always beaten their wives, and their sons had always beaten their own.

The groom, Tobias Dunmore, came to the wedding with his hat in his hands and a bruise on his wrist from his father's belt. Ada Marsh, who had mended his father's coat every winter since she was nine, stood under the lintel with him and asked what he thought it meant. He said he thought it meant nothing had been written for him yet.

At the feast, Walter Dunmore rose to make his toast and found his cup too heavy to lift. Ada took it from his hand, filled it with cider, and set it down in front of his son. "You may pour your own, Toby," she said, "or you may let it go cold." He poured. Nobody in the hall had ever heard a bride speak so.

Tobias drank the cider standing up, with the whole village watching, and that was the first thing he chose. The rest took years, and some mornings he had to choose it again. The stone above the door outlasted all of them, and children still stop beneath it to sound out the word, and nobody tells them what it means until they ask.
