Soul script on an arm
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word soul written in a delicate, single-line cursive script in black ink. The lettering has a fine, even stroke, with a looped letter o and a tall, sweeping l. The photo has a warm, slightly filtered tone and frames the lettering across the middle of the arm against a plain, out-of-focus background.

The Margaret Ann limped back into Whitby with her nets in ribbons and her hold empty, and Dad stood on the quay for an hour before he would speak to anyone. I was nineteen and thought I knew what a bad season looked like. He had a stub of carpenter's pencil behind one ear and a bank letter folded in his oilskin, and he kept taking it out, reading the same line, and folding it back up as if the figures might have changed on the way.

The trouble was the engine, two weeks of wages, and a Friday deadline in Hull. On the Wednesday Uncle Ted came down the harbour road carrying a cardboard box of old glass floats and a spool of tarred cord. He sat on an upturned crate and threaded the cord through the glass, knotting each float so the line ran from one to the next without a break. 'Hold that end, lad,' he said, and I held it. He didn't look up when he spoke. 'Most things come apart because somebody got lazy with the knot.'
On the Friday Dad walked up Church Street with his jaw set and came back two hours later with a square of gauze taped over his wrist. When he peeled it off in the wheelhouse, the word was there in a single black line, fine as a hair, the o looped like a float and the l rising tall and straight like a mast. He turned his arm toward the window so the light caught it. 'Bank can have the engine,' he said. 'They're not having this.'
