Black and grey realistic scroll tattoo with the lettering you can run from your problems but you can't run from yourself, on the side of the ribs.

Scroll with quote on the side

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded scroll of parchment unrolls down the skin, with a handwritten script quote across its centre reading you can run from your problems but you can't run from yourself. The scroll has soft, smudged grey shading to suggest folds and creases, with dark curled ends at the top and bottom. The tattoo is in black ink on a pale background of skin with some redness around it, and the framing is straight on.

Nobody at the Wrenfield reunion looked the way I'd pictured, which was a relief, because I'd spent the drive up the A1 rehearsing a version of myself who had done something with his life. Instead there was Gavin Pole, still getting my surname wrong, holding a plastic cup of warm prosecco beside a trestle of sausage rolls. "You're the one who went to Leeds and never came back," he said. "Eighteen years, and you've come back for the buffet."

Gavin had a theory about why we'd all turned up. Ms Ruddock, our English teacher, had handed us sheets of cream paper in Year Eleven and told us to write the thing we were most afraid of, then roll it up and tie it with string. She kept them in a Quality Street tin and said we'd open them at the reunion. Nobody believed her, yet there we were, and the tin sat on a chair by the fire door with its lid never quite shutting.

I found mine easily. The paper had gone soft and yellow at the folds, and the handwriting looked like someone else's, a boy who thought moving away was a kind of plan. I'd written that I would end up exactly where I started and call it my choice. Gavin read over my shoulder, laughed, then went quiet, then admitted he'd written almost the same thing and had left his roll in the tin without opening it again.

We stood there a while. Ruddock had written at the foot of every sheet in red biro, before she sealed the tin: You can run from your problems, but you can't run from yourself. I asked Gavin to pass me a sausage roll. He did, it was cold and tasted of nothing, and I ate the whole thing anyway.
