Script quote across upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a line of handwritten-style script in black ink, set across two lines of text on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and even, with the letters slightly slanted and joined by flowing strokes. The ink is a dark grey-black on pale skin, with the purple edge of a garment visible at the lower right.

The letter is wedged behind a loose stone in the chapel wall at Harrowgate Keep, where the rain has been finding its way in for two hundred years. You only notice it because the stone rocks under your palm, and when you work it free there is a fold of paper gone soft as cloth, the ink browned but still legible in a hand that leaned forward as if in a hurry.

Dear Ned, the roof over the solar fell in on Tuesday and Mr Cragg has sent word that the lead will be stripped by Martinmas, writ or no writ. I have stopped the gap with sailcloth and my good shawl. Do not come home to argue it. Bring the boys from Shields if you can find them, and bring the bread knife, for I have eaten the last of the mutton and I am sick of the sight of Cragg's men on the causeway.

At the foot of the page she has written something else, pressed so hard the nib nearly tore the paper: No power in the 'verse can stop me. Underneath, she has drawn a small crooked sun, as though to prove she meant it, and the date beside it is the same year the bailiffs first came up the valley.

You fold the letter along its old creases and push it back behind the stone, because it was never meant for you and the lead, you suspect, is already gone. Outside, the causeway shines under a low sky, and somewhere below the walls a cart is creaking towards the gate.
