Scrolling vine tattoo with green leaves

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a black scrolling vine that curls across the skin, with two green leaves and a small yellow flower with an orange centre. The linework is mostly bold black with smooth curves, and the black areas are solid with some soft shading. The colour is limited to the leaves and flower against the black scrollwork, and the design is spread diagonally across the frame on a light, even skin tone.

The bindweed had reached the timetable board again by the time Ellis came on shift, looping over the glass as if someone had drawn it there in a hurry. He stood on the bench with the secateurs in his coat pocket and decided it could stay until the 7.14 had gone, because the yellow flower on the third curl had only just opened and he wanted to see whether the guard noticed it.

Nobody noticed anything at Harrowden Road before eight. The porters swept the ballast dust off the steps and the commuters came up the footbridge with their collars turned, reading their phones instead of the names on the boards. Ellis had kept the platform garden for nineteen years, long enough to know which stems were stubborn and which only needed a clip near the root. The vine on the fence had come up from a seed some passenger dropped from a carriage window one wet August, and it had never once asked permission to climb.

At 7.14 the train pulled out and the platform emptied into a hush of pigeons. Ellis went to the board and found that two green leaves had wound themselves around the bolt holding the frame, tight as a hand. He could have cut them free in a moment. Instead he stood with the secateurs closed and listened to the gulls on the roof, and let the vine keep hold of the thing that was nearly falling.

Mrs Achebe from the ticket office brought him a tea without being asked. 'You've left it up again,' she said. 'Trains still run,' he said, and he drank the tea standing where the shadow of the leaves fell across the rails.
