Sea creature silhouette design sheet

Black and grey · Flash

A grid of nine solid black silhouettes arranged in three rows of three, each on its own white square. The subjects are a starfish, a scallop shell, a fish, a seahorse, a crab, a jellyfish, an oval shell, a sea turtle and a branching coral. The shapes are flat, with no shading or interior linework, and the sheet has no colour beyond black and white.

The stencil-cutter's bench in Marrow Quay smells of linseed and brine, and the Queen's clerk has left you nine squares of card and no instructions beyond the word quiet. You know what she means. Nine creatures for the nine gates of Sallow Reach, each to be cut as a solid shape, because the court of the drowned kingdom will not abide shading. A king under the sea wants his sigils flat and black, the way a thing looks from far below when the light has given up.

You start with the starfish, since it is easiest to get wrong. Five arms, and the knife wants to curl them. The scallop comes next, its ribs cut as tiny notches along the rim, then the fish, a plump thing with its mouth open as if it is about to deliver a verdict. The seahorse takes most of an afternoon. You keep thinking of the old tide-reader who said a seahorse is a horse that forgot the land and kept only its patience.

By the time you reach the crab, the lamp has burned low and the apprentice, Teodor, is asleep over the jellyfish, its bell trailing a wrong line of ink that you will have to trim. You cut the crab's claws wide and open, the way the guards raise their pikes at a stranger. The turtle is quick work. The coral you leave until last, because coral never comes right the first time, and you have decided to let it be ugly.

When the sheet is finished you lay the nine squares out on the flagstones and walk a slow circle around them. Nothing shines. Nothing has a face. Then the lamp gutters and the whole row seems to shift, as if the creatures have just stopped swimming, and you understand that this is what the clerk meant by quiet: a court that wants no light at all, only the shapes it chose to be remembered by.
