The lamplighter of Saltgate kept twelve brass stamps in a tin box under his counter, and every night when the bells of St Ebba's struck eleven he took them out to see which had woken. The ram was always first to stir. The scales would not sit still unless the river was calm. The crab had to be coaxed out with a pinch of salt on the lid.

One November the fog came up off the Tarr and stayed three days. Ferrymen rowed blind and the bakers could not find their own doors. On the third night the lamplighter, whose name was Oswin Pell, found the box open and the goat missing. Its print lay on the cobbles outside the chandler's, sharp and black as spilt ink, and it led up the steep steps towards the old lock where the water ran fast and white.

He followed the marks through the wet dark, past the shuttered fishmongers and the sleeping dogs, until he came to the lock gate. The goat stood on the top rail with the archer's bow raised above it, and the fish turned slowly in the churn below. Between them the water bearer was pouring out the river in long, unhurried curls, and nobody had told it to stop.

Oswin did not shout. His mother had taught him that the signs did not care to be hurried or scolded, so he sat on the wet step, took out a pencil and drew the goat again, slowly, the way it was printed, with its tail curled like a spring. When he finished, the fog thinned to a grey rim over the roofs. The goat stepped down off the rail, pressed its small black hoof against the drawing, and trotted back to the box ahead of him as though it had only been out for air.
