Nautical flash sheet of anchors, waves and ships
Black and grey · Flash
A grid of twenty-five black silhouette and line designs on a white background, arranged in rows. Subjects include anchors, a lighthouse, waves, a whale, seagulls, compass-style stars, a ship's wheel, sailing boats, a fish, a pier and a tall ship. Most motifs are solid black shapes with some fine line and stippled detail, with a few outlined elements such as the rope-bound anchors and the wave bands.

The relief boat was due Tuesday and came Thursday, with Mr Oakes at the tiller swearing about the swell off the point. He brought the wheel that came ashore in the cove after the Marigold went down, its spokes cracked but whole, and asked whether I wanted it for the mantelpiece. I told him to take it up to Skerrow pier, where the harbour master keeps the lost things. Last night the fog came in thick enough to hide the anchor I had painted on the boathouse door, so I climbed the stairs by feel, counting a hundred and forty-six steps the way I have every night since the first winter. At the top I lit the lamp and the beam went out over the water and found nothing. Then, a long way off, a small green light answered it, and I stood there until it was gone. I did not write to tell you that. I am writing it now.
