Sea god and blue horse on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A bearded sea god with long wind-blown hair grips a trident while a blue horse rises beside him in a sea of stylised waves. The figure is shaded with soft gradients and smooth blending, while the water uses bold, painterly blue and turquoise strokes. The composition fills the upper arm and wraps over the shoulder, with the figure centred and the horse in the lower left.

Sit down, sit down, the lorry can wait. You want the old road story or the new one? The old one, good. Out past the salt flats there is a stretch where the tarmac goes soft in the afternoon and nobody drives it after dark, and that is because of the grey-bearded man who came up out of the wadi with the sea still running off his shoulders.

He had a trident as long as a fence post and hair blown back as if a storm had got caught in it. Beside him ran a blue horse, and I mean blue the way the bottom of a bottle is blue, with foam at its mouth. Nobody in Tamar Wells had seen a wave in forty years, but there they were, climbing the dunes in green curls and folding over the scrub, and every one of them stopped dead at the edge of the road as if someone had told it to wait.
The sea god wanted his horse back. Some fool in the town had caught it at the old dry lake, hitched it to a water cart and worked it until its ribs showed. So he walked into the market at noon with the trident on his shoulder and asked, very politely, for the animal. The baker's boy said he had never seen it. The god looked at the boy a long time, then at the cart, then drove his trident into the ground, and a spring of cold water came up right through the flagstones.
They gave him the horse, of course. They gave him the cart too, and the boy, and the barrel of their best wine, which he tipped into the sand for the fish he said were still waiting out there. Now the road is soft in the afternoons because it remembers. Drive it slow, and if the water comes up over the bonnet, don't stop. Whatever you do, don't look at the bearded fellow watching from the dunes. He only wants to know who's looking after his horse.
