Sea turtle design with spiral shell

Mixed · Flash

A solid black sea turtle design with spiral and curled line patterns across the shell and flippers, with a small pink flower on the head. The shapes are bold and filled, with simple curved edges and no shading. The turtle is centred on a plain white background, so the image shows a drawn design rather than a tattoo on skin.

Dev found me behind the marquee with the wooden turtle cupped in both hands, as if it might wriggle off the trestle table and make for the sea. Its shell had gone soft and black with years of thumbs, the spirals worn pale at the top where my grandmother rubbed them whenever she was waiting for the kettle.

Nan carved it from driftwood the summer she arrived from Auckland. She never explained the spirals. You learned them from the water, she said, or you were just making a biscuit tin. The hibiscus came later, a pink bead glued to its head by my cousin Pip, who was seven and had been refused permission to marry the ocean.

The bride, Ruth, wanted the turtle back on the top table for the speeches so the groom's family could see what they were marrying into. Dev thought it was daft. "It's a toy, Mags," he said, and I said that was rather the point. We argued while the string quartet tuned up across the lawn, and then Ruth's little boy ran past shrieking about crabs in the rockpool, and the argument just stopped.

We walked the turtle down to the cove at dusk, the four of us in our good shoes, and set it on the wet sand facing the lowering tide. Nobody made a speech. The sea came in over the spirals and lifted the flower off its head, and Dev laughed so hard he had to sit down on the groyne. Ruth said Nan would have hated that. I think she'd have called it correct.
