Interlocking swirl hearts pencil design

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of an ornamental design made from two large open hearts and one smaller heart at the bottom, joined by looping scroll lines. The lines are thin and sketched lightly, with some visible construction marks, and the curls finish in tight spirals at the tips. The image is in grey pencil on a plain white background, with the design filling most of the frame.

The lift at Pellow House only stopped on the odd floors that winter, so Maud Tierney climbed the stairs with a shopping bag on each arm and a grudge she carried like a third bag. Nine flights, and at every landing the same smell of wet coats and fried onions. On the ninth she met Tomasz coming down with his bins, and neither of them said good morning. They had not spoken since the boiler broke in March. Instead they talked through the light well, where a length of blue knitting wool ran from her kitchen window to his, pinned at each end with a clothes peg.

He sent notes tied to the wool. She sent back notes tied to the wool. Some days the wind caught it and the line curled in the air like the tails of a kite, and some days it hung slack and grey with rain. The neighbours said it was a washing line that had gone wrong. Maud said nothing. In October the council sent a letter saying the block would come down in the spring, and the two of them stood at their windows reading it at the same moment, one floor apart in the drizzle.

So they wound the wool back and forth between the two balconies until it made a heart in the air, with two loops above it and a tight spiral at each tip, and they pegged it there and let it hold. It held through the winter gales. It held when the crane came in April and the men in orange hats looked up and laughed and then didn't.

When the last wall fell, a single strand of blue was still caught on the railing of the ninth floor, curling at its end like a fern that had decided to stay.
