The bird came back this morning, the small one that nests in the gap above the coal store, and it sat on the washing line while I hung your shirts out. Mrs Pryce next door says it is a wren, though she says most things. I told her it was the same bird that followed the lamp cart down Coronation Row the week you started at the Deep Pit, and she laughed at me and went in.

The swirl you drew on the back of the rent book is pinned above the range now. You made me promise to keep it there until you were up top again. I have watched the stem curl round itself every morning, round and round like the lane out past the chapel, and I have decided it is a road. The flower at the end is the rose bush your mother planted, the one that would not die in the frost. The leaf that drops down beside it is the one you snapped off the first time you came courting me.

The shift bell went at six, and the town has been quiet since, quieter than any Sunday. Three drops came off the stem this morning, one for each of the lads from Bank Row. Mam says they will come up when the weather turns. I am choosing to believe her.

Come home by the lane, not the lower road. I will leave the gate open and the lamp lit.
