Sea turtle tattoo on upper chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A sea turtle swims diagonally across the skin, shown from the side with its head pointing right and one flipper extended to the left. The shell and flippers have fine scale-like detailing and soft shading that gives the turtle a three-dimensional look. Teal, green, ochre and orange-red inks dominate, with the head showing brown and blue tones against the lighter skin.

The fair came to Wisbech the week the wind went round to the east, and with it came the turtle, riding in a galvanised bath under a wet tarpaulin behind the coconut shy. Mr Oakes, who owned the rides, charged a penny to look at it and another to touch the shell, though nobody had ever seen the creature leave the water long enough for a child to lay a palm on it.

Nell Garrow was nine that summer and sold toffee apples from a trestle by the gate. She had decided the turtle was a princess who had refused a sea king and been turned out of her shape for it, and she told this to anyone who would stand still. Each evening after the lamps were lit she sat on an upturned crate and talked to it. Each evening it lifted its head from the brown water and looked at her with the patience of something that had crossed oceans and did not intend to be impressed by Wisbech.
On the last night before the fair moved on to Spalding, a dealer from Hull came with a cart and money in a cloth bag. Mr Oakes counted it twice and shook hands. Nell waited until the lamps guttered and the caravans were dark, then carried the bath down the towpath with both arms and a sack of wet weed over the top. The river ran fast and low towards the Wash, and she could smell the salt in it before she could see the water.
She tipped the bath at the edge of the mud. The turtle slid out without a sound and hung there a moment, shell catching the last of the lamplight, one flipper lifted as if to wave or to push back a wave. Then it turned once, slowly, and went out into the dark where the tide was coming in. In the morning there was nothing on the mud but a single green scale, which Nell kept in her pocket for the rest of her life.
