A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gull on the harbour wall had been eyeing the fish crates for an hour, and Pim had been eyeing the gull for most of that time. Pim was a young sea turtle with enormous round eyes and a head his mother said looked like a lamp lit from the inside. Nobody in Porthkella had ever taken him seriously, which is why, when the fishermen began loading the Mary Jo for the morning tide, he climbed into the bait bucket and held on tight.

Out past the breakwater the boat began to rock, and Pim discovered that his stomach had opinions about the sea. He wedged himself between two crates of mackerel and tried to look like a sailor. Mostly he looked green, which in fairness was his natural colour, and the deckhand, a freckled boy called Eli, kept glancing over as though Pim might be a sign of something.

The gull came down on the rail with a scream like a rusty hinge and reached for the mackerel. Pim lifted one red-spotted flipper, roughly the size of a dinner plate, and patted the bird firmly on the beak. The gull blinked. It gave the turtle a long, offended look, then the harbour getting smaller behind them, and flapped off with its dignity in tatters. Eli laughed so hard he had to sit down on a coil of rope.

When they turned for home the whole quay had gathered to watch the boat come in, and for once Pim was not the one being laughed at. Old Tamsin, who mended nets and had never been seen to smile, raised a hand from the wall. Pim raised both flippers as high as he could reach, and the lighthouse seemed to blink once in approval.
