Sea turtle and plumeria in blue waves

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A green sea turtle swims diagonally across the design, with its head turned to the right and its flippers spread. Three orange plumeria flowers sit around the turtle, and swirling blue and white wave lines fill the background. The turtle has soft shading and detailed scales, while the flowers and waves use bold, solid colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had been bailing the skiff since first light when the green turtle rose beside the gunwale, barnacles crusting its shell and three plumeria blossoms turning slowly in the water around it, orange as banked embers. She knew those flowers. They came from the hotel gardens on the far point, where her mother once strung necklaces for guests who paid in dollars and never learned her name.

"You're late," Mara told it, because her grandfather always said the sea kept accounts and every debt was settled in the end. The turtle turned its head to the right, slow and deliberate, the way old men look at weather. One flipper had a notch torn from its edge. Its eye was dark and patient, and it did not dive.

Her grandfather's tale said the turtles carried the swell on their backs, and when the nets came up empty for too long, you gave them a flower and they took your bad luck down to the trench where nothing could use it. Three nights the nets had come up empty since her brother rowed off towards the mainland and did not row back. Three blossoms. She had counted them twice.

She leaned over the side, let the last bloom slide from the water into her palm, and held it out. The turtle took it gently with its beak, pale water folding around its flippers. Then it sank in one long curve of green and blue, and the bilge beneath her boots was just water again, cold and ordinary, running out between the planks.
