A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Hannah kept the level crossing at Saltcombe Halt, where the line ran so close to the shingle that spray reached the signal box windows in winter. Every night the last train went east at ten past nine, and every night a green turtle came up out of the grey water and laid its flippers on the rail, as if asking leave to pass.

The guard, a young man called Idris Penny, took it for a joke the porters played on him until he saw it himself. He wanted to stop the train and shout. Hannah told him to wait. She said the turtle had come from warm water a long way south, following the same pull of the moon that moved the tides, and that it only wanted to reach the far side, where the nesting sand was. Nobody believed her, but Idris stopped the engine anyway, and the turtle walked slowly over the line, its shell catching the lamplight like wet moss.

Years passed. The line was lifted, then relaid, and the station got a new roof. When the men came to take up the old sleepers, they found a tin bell wedged under the boards, painted with a turtle and a date. Hannah had rung it at every crossing so the turtles would know the way was clear.

On the last night before the line closed for good, Idris walked out along the sand with a lantern. He rang the bell once. Out in the surf, something green turned its head towards him, and then went under.
