Dear Marama, the tide took the old boat in the night and left a green turtle on the shingle below the church wall, turned on her back with her flippers going like someone trying to climb a ladder. Uncle Teina says she came up from the reef with the last big swell, and I believe him, because her shell was cracked along one plate the way the reef edge goes after a storm.

We carried her down to the water between us, Kahu and me, and she didn't fight. Her eye kept opening and closing as if she was counting something. The plumeria tree by the store had dropped half its blossoms across the path, white petals with yellow throats, and when Kahu lifted one from her carapace it had stuck there, a pale flower riding on her back like a passenger she had forgotten to mention.

I have been trying all week to explain to Mum why I didn't stay for the wedding dinner. This is the explanation. When she slid off my hands and the wave took her shoulders, the foam curled up behind her exactly like the carved swirl over the door of the meeting house, the one you used to trace with your finger while Grandad talked. She was gone by the next tide. Kahu says turtles come back to the beach they were born on. I told him that was a kind thing to believe, and he said it wasn't belief, it was just how the sea keeps its books. I've pressed one of the petals in the back of the Bible.
