Seal pup tattoo on a leg
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a seal pup, shown facing forward with large round eyes, whiskers and a striped, hatched body. Fine hatched linework builds the shading on the body and flippers, and the skin tone is pale against the grey ink. Above the seal are stencil-style capital letters, and below it sits a small chevron or arrow mark, both in the same black ink.

The pup had come up the shingle at Gull Skerry three nights running, and on the fourth Marjorie Tallis finally put down the logbook and walked out with the storm lantern. The wind had dropped to a sulk. Spray hung in the lamp's sweep like loose wool. She found the creature wedged between two black rocks, its round eyes catching the beam and holding it, unbothered, as though she were the one who had strayed.

She knelt on the wet stone. The pup did not flinch. Its whiskers stood out stiff and pale, and its striped coat, dark where the water had soaked it, looked like the ribbed sand the tide leaves behind. Someone had once painted WHTL in white letters on the base of the tower, half scraped away now by salt, and she thought of it while she worked her hands under the warm, heavy body. The pup was a good deal lighter than she expected.
She carried it up the path against her coat and set it by the stove in the watch room, where it blinked at the kettle with great seriousness. Near dawn the lamp turned its slow circuit over the water, and a boat's light answered from the south. Marjorie wrote in the log: one pup, returned to the sea at first light, mother seen on the ledge. Then she took the lantern down and went to see whether the tide had left anything else worth keeping.
