Small sloth on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a sloth sitting upright with its arms hanging down, shown on a pale forearm against a grey background. The linework is fine and the body is shaded with soft grey tones that give the animal volume. The design is centred on the forearm with plenty of bare skin around it.

The herald had run himself ragged by the third bridge, so the summons for Ysolde's tower fell to me, the king's least hurried clerk. Master Penhallow gave me the sealed scroll and a sloth named Brisket, who had already eaten two of his inkpots and whom nobody else would feed. He claimed a creature that never hurried could never be ambushed. I suspected he simply wanted it out of the scriptorium.

We took the Vellan road at the pace Brisket chose, which was the pace of wet bread settling in a bowl. On the ridge three men with bent knives stepped out to rob us, and they laughed at the animal sitting upright on my saddle with its arms hanging down like a bell rope. They laughed less when the sky turned the colour of pewter and the river below began to climb its banks. One of them sat down beside us to wait for something to happen. By dusk all four of us were asleep under the same larch.
We reached Ysolde's tower the morning the thaw cracked the pass. The scroll said only, Come down, the water is coming. She read it twice, then looked past me to the valley, where the whole town was climbing the hill one cart and one child at a time. Brisket had reached the sill of the topmost window before any of us. He sat there with his small grey face turned towards the flood, perfectly still, as though he had known the river would be patient enough to wait for him.
