Small creature in sunglasses on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small animal, possibly a cat, lies stretched out horizontally with a rounded head and large round sunglasses with reflective lenses. The linework is fine and the form is built with soft grey shading and light highlights on the fur and lenses. The design sits alone in the centre of the frame against a dark background, with a hand visible at the right edge.

The lenses were the only thing I'd bought that year that didn't leak, so I wore them on the wall outside the Lantern Bar while the rain came sideways off the river. Below me the lamps along Vauxhall Bridge hummed. Nobody looks twice at a cat who has already decided the night is his, and I had decided at about eleven, when Dolores Quint came out of the stage door with a fur collar and a folder under her arm. I followed her the length of Kennington Lane without once being spotted.

The folder held the Harrow Street ledgers. I knew because I had watched her counting them through the back window of the Pearly Gate, a pub with no reason to be open after midnight that was open anyway. For eleven years she had been paid in cash to keep quiet about a fishmonger's books, and now the fishmonger wanted the paper back. Everyone in Lambeth knew it. Nobody would say it aloud, not even to a cat who had sat on the bonnets of three police cars and got away with every one.

I lay down along the wet parapet, stretched out long the way I do when I am thinking, and watched her cross the road under a broken streetlight. She stopped at the bin by the bus shelter and opened the folder. Then she laughed, a short bitter sound, tore the top sheet in two and let the wind carry the pieces over the railings into the Thames.

The ledger had been blank since 1987. The whole scheme was a bluff, and she knew I knew it. I stood, shook the rain from my ears and walked home along the parapet with my glasses steady, and I did not look back at the river once.
