Seashell on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a spiral seashell angled diagonally across the upper arm, with its pointed spire towards the top right. Fine outlines define the ridges of the shell, while stippled dots build up shading on the rounded body and the open inner lip. The piece is rendered only in black and grey and sits against a dark striped top and warm skin tone.

The man on the Sunday ferry had nothing to declare except a whelk he took out of his coat pocket and set on my counter the way other men set down a wallet. Its spire pointed at the strip light and its lip was pale and open, dusted with grey from years of handling. "It's from Hollin Bay," he said. "My mother kept it on the kitchen sill. I'm taking it home to put it back." I asked him whether he understood that a shell was still a thing that could be counted, and he said he understood it was only the inside of a house after the family had gone out.

I turned it over under the lamp. The ridges were fine and close, like someone had ruled them with the tip of a pen, and the shading near the mouth had been built from thousands of small dots until it looked wet. I thought about my own mother's bread knife, which I had never once used to cut bread, and about the drawer where I keep things I cannot throw away. I stamped his slip with the green mark that means nothing is owed and slid it back across the counter.
He didn't put it away. He tipped it towards me so I could see the inside, the curl going inward and going on past where my eyes could follow. "Go on," he said, "it's the only way it sounds like anything." I didn't hold it to my ear with the queue waiting behind him. That night, in the staff car park with the engine off, I did. There was only the motorway, a long grey hush, and it was enough to make me wait a while before I drove home.
