Traditional style tattoo of a seated black cat with a gold collar beside red hieroglyphs, on the lower leg.

Seated black cat with hieroglyphs on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a seated cat in profile, with a gold collar and a yellow-highlighted eye, sits on the right of the design. Red-brown hieroglyphic symbols in outline run down the left side, and partial lettering is visible along the bottom edge. Bold black fill contrasts with the thin red and gold details on the skin.

Sit closer, the lot of you, or the fire will eat the best of it. You want the tale of Madame Sekhmet's Egyptian Wonders, or what was left of them by the summer the big top went grey? Right. Then mind the cat.

The cat was called Nefer, and she did not perform. She sat on a cushion of faded velvet in the wagon at the end of the lot and watched the rest of us the way a magistrate watches a man in the dock. Every night the proprietor, Mr Aldous Pim, a man with rings on every finger and debts on every one of them, went in to beg her to do the trick with the gold collar, the one where she rose and turned three times before the crowd. Every night she declined.

Then one evening the crowd was thin, a handful of farm lads and a vicar's widow, and Pim came out of the wagon as white as lamp oil. The cat had walked past him, collar catching the lantern, and sat down square in the middle of the sawdust. She stared at the empty benches for a long while. Then she yawned, and the lads swore afterwards it was the yawn of a queen who had finally read the bill.

Pim sold the tent the following week. The painted panels with their red-brown birds and eyes were lifted off for a museum in Bristol, and the cat went with the wagon to a bungalow in Sheffield, where, I am told, she still sits by the window and will not be bought. Nobody who was there ever called her a mouser again.
