Seated elephant with patterned body
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A seated elephant with its trunk raised is drawn in black ink on white paper. The body, head and legs are filled with dense ornamental patterns of swirls, dots, scallops and geometric shapes. Shading comes only from the density of the patterns, with no colour used.

The stationmaster at Millbrook Road had stopped asking why the elephant sat at the end of platform two. It had appeared the spring the signal box went electric, a seated thing of ink and wire that nobody had ordered, its trunk lifted as if to catch the first rain. You learned to step around it on the way to the ticket hatch, and you learned that the swirls across its shoulders were not decoration. Mrs Okafor from the parcels office swore each dot was a platform number and each scallop a delayed train.

You doubted her until the November you missed the last northbound. Fog rolled up out of the cutting and the lamps turned everything into soft gold smudges. Your phone was dead, the departures board had gone blank, and the bench was wet. You sat down beside the elephant because it was the only thing on the platform that looked as patient as you wanted to be. Its skin was cool under your palm. Following a spiral with your finger, you found that the pattern kept going, a route that folded back on itself through hatched triangles and small round eyes.
Somewhere in that lattice the timetable began to make sense. The 21:14 to Carlisle, the freight that never stopped, a half-moon of shapes that meant the points at the junction would be clear in four minutes. You stood, and the fog thinned exactly as the pattern had promised. When the train came in, its headlamp caught the raised trunk and the ink seemed to shine.
The next morning you told Mrs Okafor she had been right. She only nodded, tapping one scallop on the glass with a fingernail, and said the elephant had never once been late.
