Swallow with paisley and lace-style flowers
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a swallow in flight with a long forked tail, its body and wing filled with scrolling paisley shapes and curled details. Behind it sit a rose-like bloom, leaves and a paisley teardrop, all linked by a fine dotted net pattern that suggests lace. The design is drawn in black ink on white paper, with heavy outlines, dotted fills and no shading or colour.

The band had packed up an hour before, but Ada still hadn't found her gloves. Mr Pryce was stacking chairs in the back room of the Palais, humming something from the wartime records, and she could hear the scrape of each leg against the boards like a clock counting down the last of the night.

She had come in the autumn to sew the lace curtains for the upstairs windows, and had stayed because Tom Ellery kept finding reasons to need a new hem on his cousin's dress. He danced the way a swallow flies, all dip and swerve and no wasted motion, and she had watched him through a whole summer of Saturdays, pretending she was only counting the stitches on the chiffon. The net she'd knotted for the veil was dotted with tiny seed pearls, a hundred of them, and she had never once told him that she sewed the paisley into the hem of every dress she made for the girls who could afford to dance, each curl a small wish she kept to herself.
Tom was waiting by the side door with her gloves in one hand and a brown paper parcel under his arm. He had a roll of black ink in his coat pocket, the kind the sign-writer used, and he took her wrist and drew a line across her knuckles before she could object. It curled like a rose stem. She laughed and he didn't, and that was how she knew.
"The train goes at six," he said. "Come with me or don't, but don't stand in the cold deciding."
She picked up her scissors from the table, snipped one thread of the lace from the hem of her coat, and tucked it into his buttonhole like a flower.
