Fine line black tattoo of a seated, headless figure hugging its knees, with a flowering branch rising from its neck, on the lower limb.

Seated figure with flowering branch on a limb

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black linework tattoo shows a seated figure with its arms wrapped around its knees and a leafy branch with small five-petalled flowers growing from where its head would be. A second small profile face with curled hair sits at the lower left, near the feet. The lines are single-weight with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink against pale skin on a dark background.

Dear Nell, the stall in Brindle Market has been shuttered since Tuesday, so I've taken to sitting on the back step of the flat with my knees pulled up, letting the rain do the talking. You'd laugh. Abernethy still shouts his prices at nobody through the drizzle, and the pansies he keeps in tin buckets are soaked through and looking happier for it.

Everyone asked me last month why I'd stopped speaking at the counter. I didn't have a reason I could give them in a sentence. What I had instead was a sort of green pressure behind the eyes, and by the end of the week small white flowers were pushing out through my hair, and Mrs Lowther from the fishmonger's went pale and said nothing at all. I've kept the flowers. They're a nuisance on the bus, but they're honest, which is more than I've been.

The small face down by my feet is the one that gets it right. It's the old me, the one with the curls and the sharp chin who used to tell me to speak up and then fell asleep on the bus home. It doesn't say much either, but it tugs at my ankle when I've been still too long, which is how I know to get up.

So I'm getting up. I've pressed one of the flowers between the pages of this letter. Don't crush it. Tell me what the rain is doing to your roses.
