Sunflowers in a vase on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a clay vase with a bouquet of sunflowers and leaves, drawn as a single outline with no shading. The linework is thin and even, and the petals are simplified into loose, overlapping shapes. The design is entirely black ink on pale skin and is photographed straight on, filling most of the frame against a blurred background of shelves and a patterned fabric sleeve.

Dear Tom,

I'm writing this at the tiller hole with the stove ticking behind me and the lock at Hatton still forty minutes off, so forgive the wobble. The cut is full of leaves this autumn, and the mooring at Braunston smelt of diesel and wet hay. Mrs Achterberg's cat has taken up residence on the coal bunker again, and I have stopped pretending I'll shift it.

I found Dad's sketchbook in the locker under the bunk when I was looking for the spare windlass. You know the one, the grey cloth cover with the coffee ring. Most of it is lock gates and paddle gear, but near the back there's a page where he drew a clay pot and a fistful of sunflowers, all in one line. He never lifted the pencil. I tried it three times on the back of a gas bill before I got it even, and I still can't see how he kept his hand so steady, going over the petals and back again.

I've copied it onto the squat blue pot on the cabin shelf, the one we bought at the Tuesday market, and I've decided not to rub it out. It isn't finished. The bottom edge wanders where the boat rocked while I was drawing, and I like it better that way.

I'm going to put the kettle on and then walk to the shop. Come up in June if you can. There'll be sunflowers along the towpath by then, if the council hasn't cut them down.

Love, Nell
