Sectumsempra lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single word, sectumsempra, written in thin black handwritten-style lettering across the forearm. The strokes are even and monoline, with the ascenders and descenders kept fairly short and the letters slightly uneven in a natural, hand-drawn way. The skin tone is the only colour in the image apart from the black ink, against a warm wooden surface in the lower part of the frame.

Mr Okonedo had taught Latin at Hollins Road for twenty-six years, and in all that time no boy had ever brought him a spell. So when Tomasz Pell slid a folded page across the desk on a wet Thursday, with the word underlined twice in biro, the old man put on his reading glasses and assumed it was a mistranslation of Caesar.

"It's not Latin, sir. It's from a book."
"Everything worth reading is in Latin, or near enough." He frowned at the letters. Sectumsempra. Nothing in his grammar supported it, but the ending had the bones of a future tense, and that bothered him more than he would admit.
He took the page home that evening and tried it on the things he had: a cabbage on the windowsill, a bread knife, a sheet of thin card. Nothing happened, which he found a relief, and then he went to bed. In the morning the cabbage had a clean split down its middle, as neat as a letter opened with a paper knife, and the card lay in two perfect halves on the draining board.
He did not tell the boy. He went to the classroom early on Friday and copied the word onto the whiteboard in his best capitals, then stood beside it for a long time, unsure whether he was teaching or confessing.
