Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and the bridge keeper is still counting his coins, so we have until he finishes. You want to know about Serafín. Everyone at the pass knows the name, though most have forgotten why the stone post by the river has his letters scratched into its face.

He was a mule boy when the frontier was still a line of white stones and a pair of tired sentries who drank together after dark. Every dawn he led the animals across the shallow ford with bundles of wool and salt, and every dusk he came back with the officers' letters tucked inside his shirt, because the sentries could not read well and the boy could read very well indeed. He read them aloud to the men on the wall. He never once read them wrong.
One October the letters stopped. A grey wind came down from the high meadows, and the river rose so fast the ford was gone for three days. On the fourth morning the sentries found a single sheet pinned to the post, written in a hand so fine it looked like thread, and beneath it one word: Serafín. Nobody had signed it. Nobody had seen who pinned it there.
The old men say the boy walked into the water with his mules and came out on the far bank, dry and singing, and then climbed the hill and never came back down. The sentries say otherwise. Believe what you like, but check the stone. The letters are still there, cut so smoothly that only a wet thumb can find them. Wet your thumb now and run it along the post. Feel that? That is where he crossed.
