Black and grey dotwork mandala tattoo with a seed of life motif and scale-patterned shapes across a person's upper back.

Seed of life mandala on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental mandala centred on a seed of life of overlapping circles, with fine linework outlining a lotus-like frame and scaled shapes beneath. Shading is built from stippled dots that fade from dark to light across the central circles, while the outlines and petal details are crisp single lines. The design is framed by a pointed top motif and dotted flourishes, and it is composed symmetrically on the upper back against a neutral skin tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lighthouse keeper's daughter, Maren Holt, counted the dots on the harbour wall every morning because her grandmother had said the dots were the town's memory. Forty-one pebbles of grey granite, pressed into the mortar by masons who had long since drowned or moved inland. Maren never trusted the number. She trusted the circles she drew in the wet sand below the slipway, one inside another, six of them, until the tide came and took the lines without complaint.

The fishermen laughed at her geometry. Old Tobias Renk said a circle was just a boat that had not yet decided where to go. But when the herring stopped running that autumn, and the nets came up with nothing but kelp and a single silver scale the size of a thumbnail, it was Maren who remembered the drawing. She had seen the same flower pattern carved on the underside of the drowned chapel's font, six circles overlapping at the centre, and she had taken a candle down to the flooded nave to copy it.

She went down again at low water with a rope and a tin of chalk. In the shallows, where the sand had crept back over the font, she traced the outer ring, then the next. The eel-fish came to the edge of the light, slow and patient, their scaled bodies rippling like the pattern she had drawn, and they circled the flower until the tide turned.

In the morning the nets were heavy. Tobias said nothing, only tipped his cap toward the chalk lines still showing faintly on the stones, and began counting the pebbles on the wall again, just to be sure they were all still there.
