Flower of Life and lotus across upper back
Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo
A rainbow-coloured Flower of Life design fills a circle across the upper back, with overlapping rings of evenly spaced circles in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Below it sits a lotus with layered petals shaded in purple, magenta and yellow, giving the flower depth and a soft gradient. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the circle and flower stacked along the spine.

The last winter the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Circus owned a big top, Mabel Rourke spent four nights hand-stitching circles onto the canvas, because her grandfather had always said every ring in the world was made of seven smaller rings, and if you drew them right the whole thing would hold together. Nobody believed him, least of all the bank in Doncaster.

I ran the follow spot, which meant I was the only one who could see the whole tent from above. I watched her work the design in red thread, then orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, one colour a night, so the circles came out like a rainbow wrapped around a dropped stone. When she finished, the dome looked like a window onto somewhere else. The lotus came later, pinned under the trapeze rigging. Sinead, who did the water act, painted its petals magenta at the tips and gold at the throat, because she said a lotus only opens in mud.
The bank came in April. The auctioneer walked under the canvas, tapped a pole with his cane and asked what the stitching was for. Mabel said it was a map. He said it looked like a dartboard. We packed the rigging into two lorries and left the big top folded on the field outside Thorne, the circles facing the sky.
That evening the sun slid behind the bypass, and the one spot I had left, a single gel wheel, swept slowly over the folded canvas. The rings lit one after another, red to violet, and the field went quiet with the whole village watching from the fence. I switched it off before anyone could ask me to stop, and kept the wheel in my coat pocket, still warm.
