Small black fine line semicolon tattoo on the upper back of a woman with her blonde hair in a bun, walking along railway tracks.

Semicolon tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind, with blonde hair tied in a bun, walks along a railway track beside grass and gravel. A small, solid black semicolon sits on her upper back, just below the nape of the neck, in simple fine linework. The composition leads the eye along the converging rails, with the tattoo as a small detail in the lower right of the frame.

The notice had to reach London by the four o'clock train, and Ada Thwaite had been bent over it since dinner. The pit at Coldharbour was finished. She wrote the words three times in her careful hand: the seam is worked out; the men are paid to the end of the month. Each time she stopped at the mark between them and could not bring herself to put a full stop there.

Her father had been a ganger on that line for thirty years. He used to say a rail was only a promise that the next sleeper would hold. Where the two tracks bent together at the crossing, you could see them meet far off, and he said that was only the eye's way of making a promise look finished.

She pressed the pen down, and a small black dot sat beneath the stroke. She sent the notice with the sentence still open, so that whoever read it would have to go on to find the rest. A week later a reply came asking what she meant. She said the sentence was not ended, and the company, which had never once left a sentence unfinished, sent a man with a theodolite to see. He found a second seam under the hill, rich enough to keep the lines down for another twenty years.

The men went back to the new level. Ada kept the telegram framed above the signal box, mark and all, so that anyone waiting for a train could read it.
