Small script tattoo on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, with her hair tied up and a black strappy top across her back. A small, thin black script tattoo sits between the shoulder blades near the base of the neck, reading as a short line of lowercase lettering. The image is in full colour, with the background of high-rise buildings and bright sky, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

The ferry from Skerrow was late again, so Nell sat on the bollard outside the post office with the last postcard on her knee and a pencil stub between her teeth. Eleven cards already sat in the sack on Maddy's counter, each addressed to a man in Glasgow who had not written back since March. The twelfth had only one line on it, and she had crossed out the first draft twice.

She kept it short because Maddy charged by the word and because short was the only honest way she knew. Write it small, she told herself, the way the wind writes on wet sand. Then the gulls lifted all at once off the slip, the boat's horn sounded past the breakwater, and she stopped thinking about ink.
The boat tied up. A man stepped off with a canvas holdall and a face the sea had worn down to its bones. He went straight to the counter, asked for stamps, and while Maddy turned to the rack he glanced at the sack and saw the cards bundled in their rubber band, all addressed in the same careful hand.
He lifted the twelfth, read it, and laughed once, the way a man laughs when a debt he forgot is finally called in. He set it back on the pile. "Post that one," he said. "I'll be on the next boat, if the wind holds."
