Serenity script lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the word Serenity written in flowing cursive script, set vertically from top to bottom on a plain white background. The linework is black with varied stroke weight, thick at the curves and thinner at the joins and tails, and there is a sweeping swash line curving beside the lettering. The composition is centred and uncluttered, with no shading or colour.

The proving cabinet has been ticking since three, and the flour on your forearms has dried to a pale crust you no longer bother to brush off. Nobody else is up. Out on Cutler Street the lamps are still orange, and the only traffic is a milk float coughing somewhere behind the bins. You fold the dough the way your mother taught you, pulling each edge down and tucking it under until the loaf goes taut and smooth.

The chalkboard by the door still shows yesterday's specials in Donna's looping hand. Before she left for Spain she wrote one word beneath them, small, with a flourish on the first letter that she swore was pure showing off. You have never rubbed it out. Serenity, it says, running down the board at a slant, as if the word had been trying to slip out of the frame. For months you assumed it was a joke about the queue on Saturdays.

At twenty past five you slide the first tray into the deck oven and shut the door on its rush of heat. The crust begins to crackle, that thin singing sound that means it is setting. You take the dusting brush and sweep the bench in one long curve, the way she always did, and for a moment the room is perfectly still.

When the sun finally lifts over the tiled roofs, it lands on the board and the chalk catches the light. You read the word again, slower this time. The loaves are cooling, the kettle has not yet boiled, and there is nowhere else you need to be. You pick up the chalk, add a small looping line beneath her word, and go back to work.
