Looping script ampersand design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A single bold black ampersand drawn in a flowing script style, with a thick and thin stroke that creates a looping upper bowl and a long swash extending to the upper right. It ends in a small filled ball terminal and sits on a plain white background. The image is a solid black line drawing with no shading or colour.

Dear Nell, the boat's name went on this morning, and I'm writing before the paint is dry on my good sense. Mr Tennant had me up the ladder at six with the gold leaf and the little brush, and when I came down he asked what I'd made of the ampersand. I said it looked like two fish tangled on one line, which he didn't find funny.

The owner wants the name spelt out in full, Harbour and Tern, but the old lettering block in the back shed only has the flourish, the one with the long tail that swings up past the capitals. Mam cut that block for her father, you'll remember, and I've been copying it by eye since I was twelve. It loops at the top like a knot in a net, then runs off toward the sky as if it has somewhere better to be.
The Harbour and Tern went out on Tuesday with Dan Ashby and his brother aboard, and the weather came in before the tide did. Mr Tennant came round the quay with his cap in his hands, asking if anyone had the new name right. I told him it was done. He looked at the lettering a long while, then said the ampersand was the only part the sea would recognise. I'm still not sure what he meant. The boat is back, and both Ashby brothers are in the chip shop as I write, arguing about which of them was sick over the side first.
